Christmas Yule Log Recipe – Classic Bûche de Noël Dessert

December 21, 2024

Christmas Yule log is a rolled chocolate sponge filled with lightly sweetened cream and finished with chocolate frosting. A few simple decorations make it look like a woodland log without complicated pastry work.

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 200 g dark chocolate and 100 ml cream for frosting

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C. Line a shallow Swiss-roll tin with baking paper.
  2. Whisk eggs and sugar until pale and thick. Sift in flour, cocoa and baking powder, then fold gently.
  3. Spread in the tin and bake for 10–12 minutes until springy.
  4. Turn onto a sugared sheet, peel away the paper and roll while warm. Cool completely.
  5. Whip cream with icing sugar. Unroll, spread the filling and roll again.
  6. Pour over ganache, drag a fork through it for bark lines and chill for 30 minutes before slicing.

Tips and storage

Rolling the sponge while warm prevents cracks. Keep the finished log refrigerated and serve within 2 days; let it stand for 15 minutes before serving.
