Blueberry-Ginger Fizz Mocktail: Refreshing Sparkle

March 29, 2025

A Perfect Mocktail for Any Occasion

Blueberry-Ginger Fizz is a zesty, colorful mocktail that was created as a contemporary twist on the traditional ginger ale soda. The heat of ginger combined with the sweetness of blueberries, an age-old yet fresh flavor combination, is employed in this delicious mocktail.

According to legend, the drink was originally invented by a Portland, Oregon bartender who loved to play around with natural ingredients and reinterpret traditional drinks. On a sweltering summer night, they were preparing for some special non-alcoholic occasion and were determined to craft a mocktail that would capture the crisp spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Blueberries, fresh and abundant in the area, formed the base of the drink. To offer a tangy complement, the mixologist added a sprinkle of freshly grated ginger and a pinch of lemon. The outcome? A drink as finely made—vibrant, spicy-bright, and just cool.

Blueberry-Ginger Fizz was a quick hit due to the richness of flavor and high-design presentation, making it a summer staple at farm-to-table restaurants and high-end juice bars. Today, it’s being consumed worldwide, loved for its simple ingredients and refreshment.

Blueberry-Ginger Fizz Mocktail Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries (with extra for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger (or 1 teaspoon ginger syrup for a milder version)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (to taste)
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon (approximately 1 tablespoon)
  • 1/2 cup soda water or sparkling water (for fizz)
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint leaves (garnish)

Optional:

  • A dash of ginger beer (for additional spice, if desired)
  • Lemon slices (garnish)

Instructions:

  • Make the Blueberry-Ginger Fizz Mocktail Base:
  • In a small pan, mix blueberries and fresh ginger grated, with a little water. Simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until blueberries are soft and start to release juices.
  • Mash blueberries during cooking with the back of the spoon. Take off heat and let the mixture cool once it has thickened.

Strain the Mixture

  • Strain the cooked blueberry-ginger mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl or jar, pressing down firmly to extract as much juice as possible.
  • Discard the pulp.

Sweeten & Add Citrus:

  • Combine the honey or maple syrup into the blueberry-ginger mixture and the lemon juice. Mix well and test for sweetness or tartness and adjust to taste.

Assemble the Drink:

  • Fill a highball glass with crushed ice. Pour 2-3 tablespoons of blueberry-ginger syrup over the ice.
  • Top with soda water or sparkling water, stirring lightly to mix.

Garnish & Serve:

Garnish with additional blueberries, a lemon slice, and fresh mint leaves for a splash of colour and freshness. Alternatively, add a splash of ginger beer for additional heat.

Relish your cool Blueberry-Ginger Fizz—just the thing for a hot summer day or any occasion when you’d like to enjoy a tasty, alcohol-free treat!
