History and Cultural Significance Hibiscus Juice in Mocktails
There is a rich history steeped in tradition and cultural significance to hibiscus juice. Known in some regions as “Jamaica,” and in Egypt as “Karkade,” hibiscus tea has been enjoyed for centuries because of its vibrant color, tart flavor, and many health benefits it provides. To many people, it is more than just a refreshing drink, but an embodiment of hospitality, community strength in gatherings, and warmth.
The globe mixology arena recently adopted hibiscus juice due to its bright color and acidity, providing the perfect foundation for mocktails. Its natural acidity goes great with a broad array of flavors; therefore, the creativity involved can go quite wild in concocting palatable and even pleasing-to-the-eyes non-liquor. Due to the shift to healthier living with less alcohol consumption, the mocktail recipe is now popular. Hibiscus juice filled newly brewed mixers, coming together in making a traditional yet new-style cocktail for the pairs to work very well.

- 1/2 tsp black salt
- 1/2 cup Soda water or carbonated water
- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
- Juice of one lemon, add slices for garnish

Instructions to make Hibiscus Masala Splash:
Brew the Hibiscus Tea:
Boil 2 cups of water and add 1/2 cup of dried hibiscus flowers. Let it steep for around 15-20 minutes or until the water becomes a deep red color.
Strain the tea into a pitcher, add sugar/sweetener to taste if desired, and chill in the refrigerator.
Mix the Base:
In a bowl, mix the cooled hibiscus tea with cranberry juice. Mix well.
Add Flavours:
Add the chaat masala, roasted jeera powder, and black salt to the hibiscus and cranberry mixture; mix well so that the spices are well distributed.
Muddle the Mint:
In another glass or shaker, put the fresh mint leaves with lemon juice. Slightly muddle the mint so that its essential oils get released without tearing it into pieces.
Mix well and serve:
Pour the mixture of hibiscus in the glass containing muddled mint, stir gently.
Fill with ice cubes and top it with soda water. Stir gently.
Garnish:
Garnish it with a slice of lemon and mint sprig to give it a refreshing look.
Enjoy:
Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing, tangy, with its spiciness of your Hibiscus Masala Splash!
The Twist:
This mocktail captures the best balance of acidity from hibiscus and cranberries balanced with spicy chaat masala and roasted cumin, a flavor reminiscent of street food from India. A cooling factor comes from the addition of mint in it, which makes it an ideal drink for scorching days or for the festive occasions.
